Nine data-driven research projects have won funding from Princeton University’s Schmidt DataX Fund, which aims to spread and deepen the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning across campus to accelerate discovery.
In February, the University announced the new fund, which was made possible through a major gift from Schmidt Futures.

A wide-ranging collection of new research projects from disciplines across campus have been selected to receive Princeton funding through the Dean for Research Innovation Funds.
The National Academy of Sciences has elected four Princeton faculty members to join its ranks. They are among 100 new members and 25 foreign associates who were selected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Those elected bring the total number of active members to 2,347 and the total number of foreign associates to 487. Foreign associates are nonvoting members of the academy, with citizenship outside the United States.
“The cherry blossoms are out, we might be seeing a few April showers. It’s a great day to celebrate!” said Todd Kent, director of Princeton’s Program in Teacher Preparation, in kicking off the commemoration of the program’s 50th anniversary.
Eric and Wendy Schmidt announced on April 8 that Saki Takahashi is one of 20 new Schmidt Science Fellows — a program of Schmidt Futures, in partnership with the Rhodes Trust.
Twelve scholars from disciplines spanning the sciences and humanities have been named among Princeton’s first cohort of Presidential Postdoctoral Research Fellows, a program aimed at enhancing diversity in the professoriate.
Health care-associated infections — illnesses that people contract while being treated in a hospital or other health care facility — sicken millions of people each year and cost billions of dollars in additional treatment. While there has been some improvement over the years, on any given day, about 3 percent of the hospitalized population in the United States has at least one health care-associated infection, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Carbon dioxide emissions rose in the U.S. by 3.4 percent in 2018, according to preliminary estimates released this week. Increased electricity demand and economic growth are among the contributing factors the report cites. Interestingly, electricity production from coal actually dropped last year.

Princeton University faculty members Rebecca Burdine and Elke Weber have been named 2018 fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for their scientifically or socially distinguished work.
New fellows will be honored Feb. 16 during the 2019 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., and in the AAAS News & Notes section of the Nov. 29 issue of Science.
