On July 27, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) named cancer therapeutics and Princeton spin-out company Kayothera Inc. winner of its 2021 Start-up Stadium competition. The company was selected as the winner from 16 finalist companies who were judged on the strength of their commercially viable cutting-edge technologies and therapeutic solutions.
Andrea Goldsmith, dean of engineering and applied science and the Arthur LeGrand Doty Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Princeton, was elected to Intel’s board of directors, effective Sept. 1. She will serve as an independent director.
Last week, a federal district court judge ruled the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is unlawful and ordered the government to stop approving new applications. Now, Princeton University President Christopher L. Eisgruber has joined with leaders from colleges, universities, and the business sector to call for immediate action to “pass the bipartisan Dream Act of 2021, and end this constant rollercoaster of lawsuits and uncertainty."
David Spergel, emeritus professor of astronomy at Princeton and the former director of the Center for Computational Astrophysics (CCA) at the Flatiron Institute, became president of the Simons Foundation on July 1. Simons Foundation co-founders Marilyn and Jim Simons selected Spergel for the role in December 2020. The Simons are now co-chairs of the Simons Foundation Board of Directors after stepping down from their day-to-day leadership roles.

Monica Ponce de Leon, dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton University, has been honored as a “Great Immigrant” by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
Ponce de Leon, who was born in Venezuela, is among 38 naturalized U.S. citizens from 35 countries of origin who will be celebrated for their contributions to American society.
